2NDE3…LA CLASSE!
Comme chaque année, des élèves du lycée les Eucalyptus ont bénéficié, une fois par trimestre, du projet culturel annuel, interdisciplinaire, mené par la professeure documentaliste Mme Quilichini en partenariat avec l’Espace Magnan.
Ayant participé au dispositif « Lycéens au cinéma », les 34 élèves de la 2nde3, inscrits par leur professeure d’anglais Mme Fucher, ont pu voir, avec deux autres classes, le film américain Les Dents de la mer (Steven Spielberg, 1975) et les films français En Liberté (Pierre Salvadori, 2018) et Loin des hommes (David Oelhoffen, 2014).
Le premier était en version originale sous-titrée, ce qui représentait une belle opportunité linguistique pour les élèves. Il n’y a pas eu de séquences entières autour des films, mais plusieurs séances ont été consacrées aux échanges d’analyse et d’opinion, à l’oral puis à l’écrit sous forme de critique de film.
Le jour qui a suivi le visionnage du dernier film, Loin des hommes, les élèves ont pu échanger avec un intervenant extérieur, monsieur Pascal Génot. Ce dernier est scénariste et enseigne à l’université. Partenaire de notre établissement dans le cadre du dispositif »Lycéens au cinéma », il a aidé les élèves des trois classes (et les enseignants !) à comprendre le contexte historique abordé dans le film. Celui-ci est une adaptation de la nouvelle « L’hôte » d’Albert Camus.
M. Génot a également attiré notre attention sur les effets visuels et les choix esthétiques du réalisateur pour défendre un propos engagé. Il a échangé pendant deux heures avec chaque classe, puis donné des pistes pour approfondir nos connaissances sur le sujet très complexe de la Guerre d’Algérie.

Les élèves de la 2nde3 ont suggéré quelques améliorations, parmi lesquelles la possibilité de visionner les films en anglais (sachant que ce dispositif est culturel bien plus que linguistique !), mais ils ont été tous enthousiastes de participer aux trois sorties culturelles.
Par ailleurs, ils ont été marqués par le dernier film dont ils ont compris certains aspects complexes, seuls, puis avec l’aide précieuse de M. Génot.
Celui-ci a invité les élèves à partager leurs impressions sur le film Loin des hommes et leurs expériences familiales (relations franco-algériennes, vécu des algériens et des « pieds-noirs » pendant et après la guerre).

PROJECT REVIEWS
Question: ‘’Did you like this cinema project and would you recommend it?’’
Fabio: ‘’I absolutely recommend other students to participate in this cinema project because it helps us improve our English. It also enables us to socialize with our classmates and with pupils from other classes. It’s a great way to make friends and learn while having fun.’’
Saif : ‘’We were able to watch three different films of three different film genres. There were always some moral and subtle, implicit messages. I enjoyed the fact that this school project was only about learning and sharing, not about having a good mark even if we had to talk about them in English in class, analyze them and write out film reviews.’’
Marwan & Axel: ‘’As far as we’re concerned, we wish the three films were in English because we think watching movies or series in English makes it easier for us to learn this language.
This project made us happy because we could learn things in a different place than classrooms.’’
Lenny: ‘’This cinema project was a really good experience to me. I liked the three movies we saw and what I preferred was the fact that we were mingled with other classes. We got acquainted with other pupils and it was a true social experience as well as a cultural one.
I recommend this project because we were able to discover some films that we wouldn’t have seen on our own. We could also have fun and share our impressions with other pupils, outside school and in class. Besides, it helps us become critical thinkers because adults help us analyze the films.’’
Nisrine: ‘’There aren’t any actual negative aspects to this project except the fact that these ‘’educational’’ films should be all in English. Far From Men was my favorite because it taught me about the Algerian War from a different angle. I advise other pupils to participate in this project because it is worth it, both on the cultural level and on the personal level.’’
FILM REVIEWS: FAR FROM MEN
Question: What was Far From Men about, and why did you like it?
Loula: ‘’The film Far from Men mixes human relationships, ethics and morals. I would have never watched it on my own so I’m happy I got to see it with the cinema project. From my point of view, Far from Men is mostly an emotional movie about friendship, loss and hope.
This film also shows us the dark side of humans and their cruelty: two rebel soldiers surrendered but they got killed anyway by the French soldiers. It made me very angry because I hate injustice.’’
Izack: ‘’I was disappointed that only one film was in English. Jaws is a suspense and horror film directed by Steven Spielberg and released in 1975. It is a must-see and there are incredible visual effects (back then) with eye-catching scenes. Far from Men, a French film with a great American actor called Viggo Mortensen, has got a deep plot which makes us reflect on wars, friendship and human condition in general. ‘’
Baptiste F: »In Far From Men, what I really liked was Warren Ellis and Nick Cave’s music because it fuels the suspense and makes the film even more enjoyable even though some scenes were a bit slow.
I also liked the fact that the film dealt with the Algerian War of Independence and showed us how much violence and suffering it caused. Also, I was able to learn all that in English class because our English teacher registered us. It means that school subjects actually teach you much more than what you would expect! »
